Microsoft AntiSpyware Expired?

If your free Microsoft AntiSpyware has expired (December 31 2005 or July 31 2006), there is good news!

There is a newer version, and it also has a new name: Windows Defender (Beta 2)

Microsoft says this about Windows Defender:

Windows Defender (Beta 2) is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, and a new streamlined interface that minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive.

Some of the improvements that Defender has over AntiSpyware (other than a better name) are:

- improved detection and removal
- a redesigned, simpler interface
- protection for all users on a computer (not just the administrator account)
- definition updates provided through Microsoft's Automatic Updates feature

If you have the old version, you can download Windows Defender here. It will automatically uninstall your old version as well.
