Eliminate Popup Ads!

Advertisers started using popup windows to add to their arsenal of annoying advertising. Similarly, "pop-under" ads are similar to popups but appear behind your current browser window, so you only see the ad once you close your main browser. There are a number of ways to get rid of these for good!

Windows XP with Service Pack 2

If you have Windows XP (any version, such as Home or Professional), and you have done your Windows updates (as you should!) to Service Pack 2 (SP2), then you already have a built-in popup blocker in Internet Explorer.

The pop up blocker is integrated into the browser and can be customized by browsing to the “Tools” tab at the top of the program. Like many pop up blocker applications, personal preferences can be set to allow/block pop ups from certain sites, as well as providing customization for how the user is alerted to the fact that a pop up has been blocked.

If you are using any previous version of Windows, such as 2000, ME, 95/98 etc, this option won't be available to you.

Mozilla Firefox Browser

Firefox is a free browser that has been gaining a lot of popularity and press recently. Among its many features it also has an effective popup blocker.

Eliminate Spyware

The root cause of a significant proportion of popup ads is due to spyware. Rid your computer of spyware and you'll reduce the popups. There are some good free spyware cleaners on my Downloads page, as well I sell most of the commercial antispyware packages.

Toolbars That Block Popups

A number of web sites offer toolbars that can be added to IE which offer features such as customized searching and most also offer the ability to block popups. My favourite is the Google toolbar but there are others available from other sites such as Yahoo. Some work better than others. A downside to using custom toolbars is that many track your surfing habits, and some even go so far as to install spyware. Stick with trusted names such as those above, but read their terms of use so you know what they do.

Popup Blocker Software

There are many different popup blocking software programs available from shareware sites, such as Download.com. They range in price from free to about $50. If you want the best popup protection available, look for the blocker software that continually updates its web site with improved versions.

Security Software From Your ISP

Some Internet service providers (ISPs) include security suites with their service that include popup blockers. Check with your local ISP to see if they have it available.

Conclusion

If you've been bothered by popup (and pop-under) ads, these solutions should fix the problem for you. Windows XP users will probably find that Service Pack 2 will suffice, but for everyone else running other versions of Windows, you have a good selection of methods to get rid of those nasty popups.
